Our Reviews of Top 5 Luxury Mattresses in Canada (January 2024)

Best Overall - Editor's Choice — Puffy Lux

Puffy Mattress

  • Remarkably dense core, ideal for spinal alignment and lumbar support;
  • Adequate body cushioning perfect for pain relief and tension alleviation;
  • The edges are robust, giving sleepers better edge support and peace of mind when lying or resting near the edge.

I think the Puffy Lux is the most exquisitely designed and aesthetically pleasing mattress around. The well-stitched side upholstery adds to the mattress’s appeal and has enough quality to help the mattress’s longevity.

I tested a very responsive mattress. It conformed to my body, offering superior coziness. From my tests, the Puffy Lux took 1.7 seconds to bounce back from compressions. This slight delay helped the layers to mold closer to my body and redistribute my weight, making me feel like I was lying on a ‘cloud.’ The Puffy was 1.3 seconds slower to respond than the GhostBed Luxe, which means the Puffy is better suited if you prefer a slow-adaptive, cradling feeling while in bed.

The plushness restricts movement a bit, but I experienced good bounce. The top layer was cool to the touch. Coolness is essential, especially with a model with such deep sinkage, as heat is more easily retained with the extra skin contact. Luckily, the Puffy combats this well with excellent heat dispersion. According to my review, the Puffy had temperatures as low as 23.8 degrees Celsius. This is cooler than the GhostBed Luxe by 8.2 degrees, making the Puffy Lux more suitable for sleepers who struggle with waking up hot at night.

Despite the plush top, I could feel rigid support from beneath. From my tests, the Puffy Lux had a sinkage of 2.5 inches. This deep sinkage caused the top layers to compress under my weight, yet I was comfortable and well-cradled, and it nicely supported my spine. The Puffy Lux had 0.58 inches more sinkage than the Douglas Original, making the Puffy Lux the better model for sleepers who enjoy a classic, deep-cradling memory foam feel that’s still supportive. While I enjoyed the mattress's quality, I also like that it comes with a lifetime warranty to further bolster trust in its quality. “The most eye-catching factor of the Puffy Lux is its soft and marshmallow-like feel. I enjoyed how light and airy it felt to lie on. This mattress’s soft and plush feel is perfect for those who love a soft memory foam mattress,” stated McKenzie Dillon, a Certified Sleep Science Coach at CNET.

Based on Our Tests

From my tests, I saw impressive motion isolation, completely putting me in a different bed space from my partner. It’s also incredibly soft, making me feel like I was sleeping on a cloud. Its breathable mattress cover is also soft and helps with skin allergies.

Best Cooling Option — GhostBed Luxe

GhostBed Luxe

  • An always cool quilted mattress cover, that combines gel memory foam and a patented Ghost Ice fabric for optimal temperature regulation;
  • Latex and memory foam build allows cushioning without restrictions;
  • Firmness level adequately balanced between sturdiness and body cradling.

My next pick is the Ghostbed Luxe, especially for its superior cooling properties. This mattress is cool to the touch, which is always a welcome feeling after a stressful day. I noticed zero significant increase in the mattress temperature during my stay in bed. It gave the feeling of being on cool water.

My review showed good motion sinking and mattress bounce. It is also quite springy, easing movement on the bed. The support I got from this mattress was impressive.

The motion sinking of the Ghostbed Luxe is a feature that stuck out to me, as good isolating qualities are helpful if you get woken up by a partner easily. From my tests, the GhostBed Luxe absorbed compressions up to 3 inches from my glass of water. My partner reported that they couldn’t feel it when I tossed and turned, meaning most motion was isolated. The GhostBed Luxe outperformed the Ghostbed Flex in motion isolation by 2 inches, making the GhostBed Luxe the better option for sleepers who want fewer disturbances at night.

Bounce is crucial for active sleepers to change their position on the fly. From my tests, the GhostBed Luxe had 8.01 inches total bounce, which is high enough to the point where I felt buoyant and restriction-free while moving across the width of the bed. This is mainly due to its Ghost Bounce layer, which helps to keep me from feeling ‘stuck’ despite the thick sinkage. The GhostBed Luxe had 1.22 inches more bounce than the Novosbed, making the GhostBed Luxe the better option for an unrestricted experience while lying down.

Despite having a high bounce, the GhostBed Luxe still offers its sleepers plenty of deep contouring sinkage. From my tests, the GhostBed Luxe had 2.7 inches of sinkage, which left me feeling well-contoured and relieved of pressure while lying in the layers. This is 0.2 inches more sinkage than the Puffy Lux, making the GhostBed Luxe the right choice for sleepers who want as much of an ‘in’ the mattress feeling as possible.

“The GhostBed Luxe is an incredibly soft mattress that has a lot of sinkage to offer. Side sleepers who need as much sinkage to even out the pressure around their shoulders and hips will enjoy this mattress’ plushness the most,” according to Michelle Rae Uy, a Buying Guides Editor at TechRadar.

Although the support might be uncomfortable for side or back sleepers, it is an assurance of density and longevity. Unlike the Novosbed and Puffy lux, this mattress’s top layer is undulating, which helps me relax easily.

Based on Our Tests

What impressed me the most from my review is the ever-cool mattress surface which adeptly sinks heat that could have made sleeping uncomfortable. Even while cooling me, I still felt the foam subtly aligning my spine and cradling my body.

Best Budget Option — Novosbed

  • Offers incredible value at half the price of other mattresses on this list;
  • Mattress firmness level makes it compatible with different sleeping styles;
  • A specially designed structure for mattress breathability ensures temperature regulation.

The Novosbed is my budget pick. From the inviting soft covers to the exquisite finishing of the side upholstery, I was quite impressed with the luxury on offer at such a price, over a thousand dollars cheaper than the Puffy lux and Ghostbed Luxe.

I think this mattress has a versatility that favors sleepers undecided about their favorite firmness level. I liked that the firmness can be picked out and adjusted on request. On testing, the firmness wasn't a reflection of the support I got, as even the plushiest version of this mattress offered premium support for my body. The top layer was plush enough for a cozy feel. However, I liked that I could move freely despite the plush top layer.

From my tests, the Novosbed had a sinkage of 1.92 inches, which is enough for a plush feel that kept my spine neutral and my hips supported. The Novosbed had 0.03 inches less sinkage than the GhostBed Flex, making both models quite similar in their firmness, feel, and sinkage.

Moving freely is also essential for a luxury mattress like the Novosbed. According to my review, the Novosbed responded moderately quickly, recovering from compressions after 0.9 seconds. I could enjoy a moment of slow-adaptive conforming foam yet still switch positions without too much effort. This is slightly faster than the Puffy Lux by 0.8 seconds, making the Novosbed the better option for slightly easier freedom of movement.

Another feature I enjoyed regarding the Novosbed was its ability to muffle motion. The best luxury mattresses in Canada typically have excellent motion isolation properties, and the Novosbed is no exception. From my tests, the Novosbed reacted to compressions only at the 2-inch mark between my compression tests and the glass of water. I could get out of bed without disturbing my partner, and they couldn’t feel it when I tossed and turned. This is 3 inches more isolating than the GhostBed Flex, making the Novosbed better suited to sleepers who want the most out of an isolating mattress.

Based on Our Tests

My tests showed that this mattress has a firmness range that caters to different sleep positions and body weights.  Also, I could scarcely feel my partner's movements even while it provided spine support.

Best Affordable Luxury Option — Douglas Original Mattress

Douglas Original Mattress

  • The easy-to-wash cover can be unzipped in a few seconds, conveniently keeping your sleeping space cleaner;
  • This mattress offers luxury at an affordable price, making it a cost-effective option for sleepers on a budget;
  • The Elastex® foam helps keep you buoyant and unrestricted, so you don’t feel trapped in the foam layers.

The Douglas Original is my best affordable option due to its excellent price point, yet still offering luxury features like high-motion isolation and slow-adaptive cradling. The Douglas Original is priced $460 cheaper than the Novosbed and $799 cheaper than the GhostBed Luxe, yet still has similar properties.

Motion isolation is a trait of most luxury mattresses, and the Douglas Original excels in this area. From my tests, the Douglas Original absorbed motion up to 2 inches from my compressions and glass of water. Similar to the Novosbed, my partner couldn’t feel when I got in or out of bed. The Douglas Original is 1 inch more isolating than the GhostBed Luxe, making the Douglas more affordable and slightly better at isolation for restless partners.

The Douglas Original also offers great slow-adaptive cradling without restricting movement. According to my review, the Douglas Original took 0.8 seconds to recover from compressions fully. This is slow enough that I could enjoy a slight sinkage for my body to ease into slowly, but I could still change sleeping positions with remarkable ease. The Douglas Original is 0.9 seconds faster than the Puffy Lux at slow-adaptive relief, making the Douglas Original the right choice for sleepers who want to have a slightly easier time when changing positions or getting out of bed.

Based on Our Tests

After putting it to the test, I found the Douglas Original effective at adapting to my body and removing pressure points while on my side. I was well-cradled yet still could move around easily, and my spine was supported.

Best Hybrid Option — The Summerhill

The Summerhill Mattress Review

  • The cool-to-the-touch cover and open-cell memory foam help to wick away heat, keeping hot sleepers cooler.
  • The mix of foam and coils provides a pressure-relieving surface to melt away tension.
  •  The reinforced centre keeps the hips and spine lifted and neutral, encouraging healthy spinal alignment.

The Summerhill is my best hybrid option due to its excellent motion isolation, response, and coolness.

A good luxury hybrid will be able to isolate motion between two partners. The Summerhill accomplishes this with its open-cell memory foam and pocketed coils. From my compression tests, I noted it took the mattress about 3 inches in distance to absorb the motion from my compressions. This is moderately high, and I surmised most sleepers won't feel it when their partner changes sleeping positions beside them.

The Summerhill outperformed the GhostBed Flex in motion isolation by 2 inches. I would suggest The Summerhill to sleepers with restless partners who want fewer disturbances at night.

Luxury mattresses should also be easy to move around in. The open-cell foam of The Summerhill has a quick response time, ensuring this. When testing The Summerhill with compressions, I noted it took only 0.3 seconds for the foam and coil layers to bounce back. I felt sleepers could easily change sleeping positions even if they were in the centre of The Summerhill.

Bounce of The Summerhill Mattress

The Summerhill had better recovery time than the Puffy by 1.4 seconds. I would recommend The Summerhill to sleepers who want a luxury feel to their mattress that is also effortless to move around in.

Coolness is part and parcel of tried and true luxury mattresses. The Summerhill fits the bill by using cool-sensation cover material, open-cell memory foam, and coils that help draw away heat. In my compression tests, I measured a rough temperature of around 28-29 degrees Celsius. This is cool enough that I got the impression that most sleepers will enjoy sweat-free nights with this model.

The Summerhill had about 2.7 degrees better cooling than the Douglas. I would recommend The Summerhill to sleepers who are sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

Based on Our Tests

According to my hand compression tests, The Summerhill provided an even, balanced sleep surface. I felt sleepers would enjoy its pressure-relieving properties without sinking into the mattress too deeply or feeling ‘stuck.

Why You Should Trust Me

I have tested and given in-depth reviews on countless mattresses. I test my mattresses to determine their comfort levels, ability to relieve pressure, and what makes them stand out as luxury memory foam mattresses. I also consider their ability to disperse heat and how well they handle weight while sitting on the edge.

Luxury mattresses need excellent comfort, contouring, responsiveness, and motion isolation capabilities to be considered for my list. I looked at these qualities closely when choosing which of my mattresses would best suit your needs as the best luxury memory foam mattress. If you want to know more about my methodology, I give more insight into how I review my beds here.

Luxury Mattresses: What Make Them

Luxury Mattresses: What Make Them

Like all the best mattresses in Canada, a luxury mattress’ construct is made from the standard mattress types available.

  • Memory foam. Many of the best mattresses in Canada have memory foam in their construction (1). This is due to the versatility of the foam, alongside its great pressure relief tendencies. However, memory foam mattresses tend to run hot except gel-infused, and they are also not great with motion isolation. “Memory foam is excellent for creating that “hugged” sensation. Luxury mattresses made of memory foam tend to be well-suited for pressure relief and spinal alignment,” explained Jessica Timmons, a writer at Forbes.
  • Innerspring. Innerspring mattresses are known for having strong edges and excellent support bases. They are also remarkably breathable as their construction allows for maximum airflow, ensuring adequate temperature regulation. However, its con is that it usually has a thin comfort layer, making cushioning almost impossible.
  • Latex. Durability and bounce are two features why many users prefer latex mattresses. It also possesses impressive body cushioning without the excessive hug, which is excellent for active sleepers. The only drawback is that latex mattresses are costly, probably due to the rarity of their production material.
  • Hybrid. Combining the best of multiple worlds, a hybrid mattress is designed for sturdiness, bounce, and pain relief. If made right, an average mattress will last for 10 years before showing signs of sagging; however, they tend to be bulky and heavy, not designed for everyday movement.

Buyer’s Guide: What to Consider

What to Consider When choosing luxury mattress
To deliver an unbiased mattress review where consumers do not feel influenced, here are a few tips that users should keep in mind when shopping for their luxury mattresses. This way, you can feel more confident in the mattress that you choose.

  • Sleeper type. When purchasing a luxury mattress, the first tip is the sleeper’s type;  it is determined by sleeping style and body weight. Some positions require intensive cushioning, while others need only a fraction of it.
    For heavier/stomach sleepers, check out our Canadian firm mattresses, as this is the most suitable firmness level for the sleeping style.
  • Hypoallergenic. This feature is especially important to allergy-prone individuals. It helps combat dust, mites, bacteria, and other allergens that one might come in contact with.
  • Thermoregulation. Temperature regulation is another feature of top-rated luxury mattresses in Canada. Mattress breathability and several cooling technologies help with body heat dispersal and ensure a sleep free of night sweats.
  • Size. The mattress bought must be the right fit for wherever it’s to be used. For example, purchasing a Cal King where a bunk RV mattress should be is a no-brainer.

To increase mattress durability and reduce sagging, it is advised that you flip or rotate your mattress once every 3 months. This way, indentations made on one side have a chance of recovering.

  • Pain relief. A mattress cannot be rightfully called luxurious if it does not perform the basic function of pain relief and pressure alleviation. The best bet for this feature is a mattress with adequate cushioning, which encourages body sinkage without giving up spinal support.

What Determines the Price of a Luxury Mattress

A luxury mattress’s price can be impacted by several factors, including how it’s been sewn, whether it includes natural materials, how thick the layers are, whether it’s a custom-designed mattress, etc.

Natural and eco-friendly material, hand-sewn quality, and custom mattress designs are important factors, meaning that the manufacturer has put a lot of care into the mattress. They make the mattress look and feel special, hence becoming expensive.

Thicker layers can also affect the price since it adds to the mattress’s quality and durability. Plus, if the mattress uses a new feature or technology to improve thermoregulation or zoned support, you can expect it to be more luxurious.

These criteria are just related to the structure of the mattress and not the bedding, cover, or sheets. The softer, more hypoallergenic, and more natural the covering materials are, the more valuable the mattress.

What firmness level is best for luxury mattresses?

The medium-firm or luxury firm is the most acceptable firmness level for luxury mattresses, as the mattress can accommodate a wide range of sleeper types. It has enough cradling for lightweight, side, and back sleepers, while support is also sturdy enough for heavy/stomach sleepers.

What mattress type is best for body cushioning?

The memory foam mattress has the best cushioning properties of all mattress types. However, it is vital to know that it comes with movement restriction, a feature no one fancies.

Choosing a luxury mattress is all about the comfort level it can offer you. Laying down and immediately feeling relaxed enough to sleep is the goal of all mattresses; however, luxury mattresses have made this a reality.

Our recommended pick of the review, Puffy Lux, has been proven adept at delivering users the optimal comfort needed for restorative sleep health. A medium-firm, gel-infused, memory foam mattress that works well with different sleeper types.
